Molds Found in Homes

Molds produce potentially harmful allergens and irritants that may lead to various health problems—including chronic coughing, fatigue, and headaches. They can endanger your family and cause extensive and costly damages to your home. How do you identify different molds? What are the health risks associated with each type? Keep reading to learn about the various types of molds found in homes.

The Most Common Molds Found in Homes

The types of mold that occur most commonly in residential environments include aspergillus, cladosporium, and stachybotrys chartarum.

Aspergillus is a very common type of fungus that sometimes appears yellow in color. It is typically found growing indoors. It frequently grows on foods, in air conditioning systems, or anywhere water damage has occurred. It may cause allergic reactions, respiratory infections, and hypersensitivity pneumonitis, a condition that causes inflammation of the lungs.

Cladosporium is black or green in color and “pepper like” in appearance. While most types of mold prefer warm environments, cladosporium can grow in cool areas as well. It often grows on fabrics, carpets, floorboards, and wood surfaces. It is nontoxic but can cause allergic reactions and various respiratory problems.

Stachybotrys chartarum (also known as black mold, or “toxic mold”) has a slimy, black appearance and a musty odor. It is typically found in areas that remain damp, such as in air conditioning ducts or around leaky pipes. The mold itself is not actually toxic, but it produces toxic compounds called mycotoxins. These compounds can cause allergic reactions, breathing problems, chronic sinus infections, asthma attacks, fatigue, and depression.

More Types of Mold to Look Out For

Other common molds found in homes include alternaria, aureobasidium, botrytis, chaetomium, fusarium, penicillium, serpula lacrymans (a yellow mold that causes “dry rot”), trichoderma, ulocladium, and efflorescence (often confused with white mold).  No matter what color or type, all molds found in homes should be treated with caution.
